Meet the chefs

chef sofia
Hi my name is Sofia Smiley and I am so excited to be joining the team here at Cooking Skills and Social! I’ve studied and graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts from Kendall College at NIU in Chicago and since then have worked in back of house and front of house management positions within the restaurant industry. During my time in restaurants, I found a love for health and fitness which led me to my next endeavour. For almost the past 3 years, I opened, own and operate my very own meal prep company local to the Bloomingdale area, called Meal Me. At Meal Me, my job is to provide the customer with healthy, individually prepared meals that are good to stay in your fridge for 5-7 days. All you have to do is reheat it in your microwave! My position with Meal Me allows me to dive deep into different cuisines and recipes and then create a way to make them healthier and provide nutrition information and calories per meal. My goal at Cooking Skills and Social is to be able to provide similar delicious, quality recipes that are easy to recreate in your home and hopefully give more insight into the health benefits and accessibility that comes along with cooking for yourself! On top of that, I’ll know I’ve done my job if when leaving my cooking classes you feel more confident exploring new flavours and cooking in your own home, because at the end of the day we are all confident cooks!

chef tony
Chef Tony Cannon grew up in the restaurant world, starting at the age of Fourteen. After working in kitchens for 15 years, Tony attended The Art Institute of Nashville for culinary school. He owns 2 food businesses: a seasoning company called That Rub, and a local food truck specializing in Southern Comfort Food, Aunt Tina's Sound Bites. Tony is a culinary artist and loves to create in the kitchen, which is how the seasoning company was started. When he realized that people wanted to not just buy the seasoning, but food made with it, he decided with his wife (and General Manager of Cooking Skills & Social) Abbey that a food truck would be a perfect way to showcase a menu featuring the seasonings!
You may already recognize Tony, as he's taught classes on a part time basis for Cooking Skills since we relaunched, however during the slow food truck season, he is here quite a bit more often, leading both public classes and Private Events.

chef alex
Beep Beep!
Alex Chooses not to be called chef, but is a working chef. Alex has had a strange and wide ranging voyage in foodservice and commercial food. Over 25 years in kitchens from classical French and Japanese there is so much of restaurant cooking that Alex will share and explain in a step by step process that will be seasoned with humor and spiced with laughs. " I will work with people to make food and cooking approachable and fun through a variety of methods. My key to making cooking an everyday pleasure is to laugh at the absurdity of seriousness and build ones cooking to be intuitive and fluid."
I am looking forward to having you in for food and laughs!
